FORMATION OF THE DIRECTORY
On October 1795, National Convention favored the Directory, a body of five directors who held executive power in France and a bicameral legislature. The Directory era is the second to the last stage of the French Revolution. The Directory era is divided into: (1) First Directory and (2) Second Directory. The rule of the Directory was marked by dishonesty, fraudulence, corruption, financial difficulties, abuse of power, political purges, and a fateful dependence on the army to maintain control. Conflict among the five directors led to the Coup of 18 Fructidor on September 4, 1797. Popular discontent with the rule was increased and government credibility was destroyed. Napoleon Bonaparte, a young military genius, with the support of the army and other government members, overthrew the Directory Rule on November 9. The Consulate was then established in France to replace the Directory.
