Maximillien Robespierre was a French lawyer and a politician. He is one of the best-known and most influential figures of the French Revolution. He was part of the Jacobin Club and later was elected president. He was also elected to the Estates-General. He advocated against death penalty, abolition of slavery, and equality of rights and the establishment of a republic. He also insisted that the National Convention proclaimed a new religion for France – the cult of the Supreme Being. These teachings were based on Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophies. His political opponents were King Louis XVI, Maria Antoinette, and Josephine de Beauhamais. He was also one of the principal architects of the Reign of Terror, which was a decree for the harsh measures against those suspected of being enemies of the Revolution. He was arrested by The Convention and tried to commit suicide but instead it damaged his job. His jaw fell off because a gendarme shot his jaw. He was sent to the guillotine for execution.
