The Bastille prison was used for defending the country, storing supplies such as ammunition and gunpowder and housing prisoners. The Bastille prison is mostly used to house political prisoners. The people who oppose the king, voice out their concern about the state of the country are thrown into the Bastille Prison. The Bastille Prison was a symbol of the King’s unconditional power over the people of France and a symbol of the corrupt system run by the monarchy. On the day of July 14, 1789, a huge mob marched to Bastille. These people were ready to give their lives in order to put an end to their overtaxing and overbearing government. The Bastille was governed by a man named Marquis de Launay. The troops of de Launay were unprepared for the huge mob therefore; the Bastille was easily broken into. The mob entered the arsenal and into the first courtyard. They asked de Launay to lower the bridges but he refused. Marquis de Launay eventually tried to make agreements with the people but to no avail. Eventually, de Launay raised a white flag to surrender the fortress. He and his soldiers were captured by the crowds and dragged through the filthy streets of Paris and were killed. After Marquis de Launay was killed, his head was paraded around the streets of Paris on a pike. This was a glorious and victorious day for the French demonstrators. The fall of the Bastille created one of the greatest symbols of the initial stage of the French Revolution. The storming of the Bastille was a huge impact in the French Revolution. It brought down a symbol of the king’s tyranny and boosted the revolutionists’ confidence.
